Monday Musings
Date: Feb 01, 2010

Happy Monday, DGA!

We had a great membership meeting last Thursday to kick off 2010.  Thanks again to Amante’s and Chef Will Mason for providing such a great place to meet, and the coffee was especially appreciated by all who braved the cold morning!  We started what I hope will become a regular part of our meetings by hearing presentations from two of our local non-profit groups:  Partners in Education and the Georgetown Area Jr. Forum.  We had a lot of good information shared about events happening around downtown businesses, a winery initiative update, and opportunities for DGA co-op ads in new markets with Community Impact.  Watch for more information on the pricing for that.  There seemed to be lots of interest at the meeting for that.

This Friday is our launch of our First Friday events for 2010.  We are holding our popular “Death by Chocolate” event and hope this will generate some excitement and buzz around downtown.  Our shops plan to be open late and will be offering chocolate temptations as our visitors go on a scavenger hunt!  We hope you will plan to join in the fun.  Scavenger hunt entries will be available in all the shops and need to be turned in at the end of the evening to qualify for the drawings.  WE could still use a couple more items for our grand prize basket, if any of you wish to make a donation.  Thank you to those who have already given individual prize items.

Next Friday, 2/12 is the Swirl event on the Square.  Tickets are going well, and are available at the Visitor Center, Georgetown Winery, and Williamson Museum among others.  For more information, check the website: www.swirl.georgetown.org.

The League of Historic American Theatres Forum is being held this July in San Antonio.  They have announced that the Palace Theatre is on the list of theatres to be toured during the Historic Theatre Ramble.  During the conference they will leave San Antonio to tour 4 theatres in Austin and the Palace in Georgetown.  We are thrilled that our local jewel is getting this sort of recognition.  This is a real honor and we offer congratulations to the Palace!

We had news of upcoming events at the Williamson Museum:

  • Fighting Back: The 1923 KKK Trials, a new exhibit, will open on First Friday, February 5, from 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Adults can enjoy guest speakers Gene Davenport and Leslie Janca from The Georgetown Project during the Wednesday, February 10, discussion on the Hope for Homeless Program from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at The Salon at Wildfire's Backroom.
  • Plan to learn about and create a unique Valentine for someone special during the next "Hands-on-History" event on Saturday, February 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • The Books for Texans Club will discuss Mary Karr's “Liar's Club” on Tuesday, February 16, at 7 p.m., in the Hewlett Room of the Georgetown Public Library.
  • Those Fabulous Fifties” is the theme chosen for this year’s Summer History Explorer’s Camp.  Students from grades 3 through 6 will learn the lessons of the Civil Rights, the Cold War, cars, and Elvis through music, dance, movies and TV shows of the period. Sign up begins February 16 for the two planned camp sessions: July 19 -23 or July 26-30. Fees are $75 per week, or $15 per day, with a 20% discount for Museum members.

For more information on these activities, contact the Museum at 943-1670 or visit www.williamsonmuseum.org.  (Editorial note: I may have missed something growing up, but I never thought of a museum as having this many COOL events going on.  Maybe if I had lived near the Williamson Museum as a kid, I would have enjoyed history more!)

Were you aware that one of our local merchants had a History Channel film crew in their shop all day last Friday?  Galaxy Cupcakes was chosen as a business because of their unique approach and food produced.  It will be aired on the Learning Channel as one of 10 featured businesses.  It is great to see one of our local businesses get this sort of recognition.  Kudos to Cheri and Cheryl!

Officials at the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter have announced a reduced pet adoption campaign from Tuesday, February 9, through Valentine's Day, Sunday, February 14.  The Adopt Your Forever Friend program will offer reduced pet adoption fees of only $50. A special Valentine Party will be held on Saturday, February 13, noon to 4 p.m., with pet vendors and treats for all attendees.

Ralph Thomas from Tribal Impressions sent out media notices about a young Native American musician that has been taking awards all throughout the Native American music scene.  He is excited that he has been able to help her develop a line of jewelry that will benefit her non-profit organization.  He sent a link that will tell you more: http://indianvillagemall.com/janamashonee.html  It is always great to see our members step up to help non-profits for which they share a passion.

See you around downtown!
