 Musings ~ June 1, 2010

Greetings, DGA and Friends of the Square~

We have one more spot in the Community Impact to fill for June.  Remember what a bargain this is, and that your business is spotlighted with an arrow to your location on a map that is part of the spread.  Please let us know if you are interested in being part of this month’s ad.  The deadline for artwork is TODAY, June 1st

This week is First Friday where shops will be open late.  We have another street dance planned from 8-10PM featuring a swing band: the Lonestar Swing Band Syndicate.  The band carries on the tradition of providing many musicians of all ages and musical ability an opportunity to play big band swing music. If you enjoy big band music then join us at our street dance for big band arrangements of the 30's and 40's as well as contemporary arrangements of old standards and jazz tunes.

We had a great DGA meeting last Thursday.  A few highlights:
~ The membership voted to keep the July and August Market Days on the Square, not relocate to the park as was suggested early in May.  There was also a policy established that all DGA events would be held downtown as much as feasible.
~ To help generate excitement and interest, there is a DGA Task Force forming with their first meeting this week to help plan another layer to the market… Operation Brave Hearts.  This will be a celebration of our community veterans and those on active duty with the armed forces, in service with our fire, police, sheriff, other peace keeping entities, and our Boy & Girl Scouts.  Watch for more information as this develops.  Our Market Days coordinators are also hard at work promoting our market vendors and music which is the regular part of these monthly events.
~ We had a couple of great presentations about some advertising opportunities: GoLocal.org and the Taylor Daily Press.
~ We were thrilled at the large turn out of members and interested business owners at the meeting.  We appreciated the feedback we had from members about how DGA is doing serving our members.  Remember, we cannot know how we are doing if we do not hear from you.  Thank you for the interest shown at this meeting.  We hope it will continue.

Did you see the front page of the Williamson County Sun?  John Marler and Karin Truxillo were quoted as well as Dan Marek from Georgetown Winery about the Winery Initiative.  The petition signing phase is well under way.  If you wish, there is a blog on this effort to help you keep up to date on the progress: http://georgetownwineryinitiative.blogspot.com/?psinvite=ALRopfVGJtk_jJaGmBll_LwfRf3ppDPJhaF0S5lbIMdthuiJ0n2rawcnPTqMM9YqGbDyw-AQ-HE1FdkAVyomE_7WjGuO5iQYyQ We are excited about the buzz that has been generated, and know the passage of this issue will be a huge “game changer” for downtown.

As a reminder, the City will be closing various parking lots this month and next for a couple of days at a time for resealing.  They will post signs and hand out flyers well in advance of the work.  Be on the lookout for lots in your areas that will be affected.

Novitá Spa let us know there will be a ribbon cutting for their newly expanded facility this Friday, June 4th at 5:15, with an Open House to follow. Megan asked that we invite all of you to stop by and take a tour!

This coming weekend is also the Georgetown Festival of the Arts“Aaron Copeland in Georgetown” event from 6/3-6/6.  There is even a free concert in the park on June 5th.  For information and tickets, you can call 512-639-0433 or check their website: www.gtownfestival.org.

The WilliamsonMuseum sent out a reminder of the next visit to the Gault archaeology site which will be on July 12th.  The Gault site has been known to archaeologists since 1929. By 1999, 60% of all excavated Clovis artifacts in the Americas had been found at Gault, as well as the oldest known architecture in America!  Tours begin at the Gault Site at 9 am. Tickets for sale at The Williamson Museum.  For more information, contact them at 512-943-1670 or caguirre@williamsonmuseum.org.

See you around downtown~
