 Musings ~ May 4, 2010

Greetings, DGA and Friends of the Square~

This is one of those months that happen infrequently where First Friday and Second Saturday Market Days fall in the same weekend!   Be sure to head downtown as our merchants keep their shops open late for your shopping pleasure as we celebrate “Fiesta!”  Then check out the Mother’s Day market on Saturday.  See below…

The Georgetown Library sent us a note about a new event as part of First Fridays: We are planning a regular Arthouse event for First Fridays. We will feature musicians, readings, and film screenings and the Red Poppy will stay open to serve coffee too.  This month we will hold an open mic night where people can play music or do a reading of their work if they'd like.  This is something you will want to check out as you visit downtown each first Friday of the month.

This week is also the kick off to our summer Street Dance series which features with a new face on the country scene:

   Kori Jean Olsen www.korijeanolsen.com

Kori Jean Olsen is proud to introduce her debut CD, “Reason Why” which was released in June, 2009 with 11 country rock, country pop, and blues songs. Kori has the ability to deliver a song in a way that lets the listener can feel her passion for the music and the message in the lyrics. If country music is your style, be sure to join us for our first street dance of 2010!

Have you heard about Free Gumbo Fridays at the office of Stephanie Featherstone State Farm Agency?  She brings in gumbo each first Friday 11AM-1PM, and invites you to come and bring family and friends… what a way to kick off the weekend!  Her office is at 950 W. University just across from the HEB at IH-35.  You may want to stop by and check this out!

We had a note about a special guest for First Friday from Julie and Bill at His & Hers Treasures:  “On Friday, May 7th at 7pm we are hosting Kinky Friedman in our store.  We are advertising it on KLBJ radio and have put in a sound bite about Downtown Georgetown's First Friday event.”   We know this Texan legend will bring in a lot of folks to downtown, and thank the Hein’s for advertising our event!

Don’t forget that also on May 7th the Palace Theatre opens their next production: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for a five-weekend run.  Purchase tickets and select seating on-line at www.thegeorgetownpalace.orgor by calling (512) 869-7469 or (512) 869-5081.  Visa and Master Card are accepted.

Saturday, May 8th is our Market Days event for this month.  We have our largest market yet with respect to the number of vendors who will be here.  With this being Mother’s Day weekend, we expect there will be a lot of foot traffic which we hope will translate into business for our downtown merchants.  The weather promises to be perfect, and the number of visitors to downtown at these events has been great this year.  Congratulations to our coordinators, Jenny and Stephanie, for getting the word out!

Galaxy Cupcakes let us know that they will be featured on TLC's Best Food Ever program on Monday, May 10 at 8:00 p.m.  Best Food Ever is a new six part series narrated by actor John Goodman. After you watch the show, come in on Tuesday, May 11 and answer their trivia question about the the Galaxy Cupcakes segment and get a special surprise!

We would love some feedback on an idea for the summer Market Days.  Last weekend, there was an event held at San Gabriel Park that was very similar in nature to Market Days.  We attended, it was a great venue and we were able to see how well the layout worked, etc.  One real problem we have for July and August is attracting vendors who are willing to sit on the hot asphalt around the Square all day to sell their wares.  The heat also discourages visitors, so that all in all, those two markets are our lowest attended and pull in the lowest revenue.  While we do will keep the spring and fall markets on the Square, we are looking at the possibility of moving the July and August markets to the park.  This would take advantage of the shade and being able to provide more kid friendly activities for these two months.  Another consideration is that Market Days is the main source of revenue to keep DGA going.  Holding a potentially larger market for these two months would help considerably.  We would return the events to the Square for September, October and November.  We appreciate your input about this idea.  It is something that could be implemented as early as this year or we could start it next year.  Thank you for any comments you can offer on this idea.

See you around downtown~
