Monday's Musings Archives Musings from your DGA Weekly Musings ~ April 27, 2010 Last weekend was Red Poppy Festival and they had great crowds on Saturday and Sunday. Even with the rain on Friday night, it was a huge success. Congratulations to Cari Miller from CVB and her team. This is a signature event for downtown, and we hope it helped our merchants with sales! Our May Market Days is shaping up to be one of our largest. With it being the Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend, we expect a good amount of foot traffic around downtown. Have you seen the new directional signs? They are located on all four corners of the Square, and are a visual reminder to our visitors to be sure to look on the streets just off the central square for more shopping, dining and other businesses. DGA has been working with the City to get this sort of signage for about a year and a half, and finally was successful in getting a design and style that won their approval.
They are up, look great and were in place in time to help direct Red Poppy Festival visitors. Thanks to Wonderful Things, Rough & Ready Antiques, The Palace Theatre, Just Kidds & More, Bill Edmiston-State Farm Insurance, Quenan’s Fine Jewelers, Georgetown Antique Mall, Novitá Spa and Jimmy Hendrix, DGA Board member for underwriting this effort. The Palace Theatre announces their next production: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat opens on May 7th for a five-weekend run. Better get your tickets early! This exciting and colorful family-friendly musical brings to vibrant life the Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors. Joseph, his father’s favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. When news of Joseph’s gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Come to the Palace and see the amazing unfolding of this multi-colored tale! The Palace office in the lobby of the theatre is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. (except selected holiday dates). Purchase tickets and select seating on-line at www.thegeorgetownpalace.orgor by calling (512) 869-7469 or (512) 869-5081. Visa and Master Card are accepted. We offer our congratulations to Judge Dan Gattis. He was recently inducted into the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame! He said he did not think much about it until he went to the ceremony and realized who else had been inducted. He said he was in some great company, and was really impressed. Then he wondered how in the world he was picked! Way to go, Judge Gattis! We had one more reminder from the Williamson County Sun about their business guide: The deadline for this special insert is April 28th. Join the other 80 advertisers who have supported our efforts to get Newcomers into their businesses. Three Legged Willies opened their doors for business on Friday, 4/23, just in time for the Red Poppy Festival. They welcome you to come and sample their menu for lunch and dinnner. A reminder that the Williamson Museum is holding their Civil War Cemetery Tales tour on Saturday, May 1. The time is 4 pm to 6 pm and tickets are $10 per person. This self-guided tour allows visitors to learn stories from the Civil War era told by people who were there, played by costumed interpreters. The tour is held at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, (Behind Southwestern University) 701 Smith Creek Road. Tickets are on sale now at the Museum and at the cemetery on May 1st. Also on May 1st, the Georgetown Heritage Society will be offering a presentation and book signing by Donna Scarbrough Josey, GHS member and Georgetown native. This new book: “Images of America Series; Georgetown” is a pictorial history featuring over 200 historic photographs, each captioned as to its history and significance. This is always a popular event, and as the capacity of the Grace Heritage Center is limited, they encourage you to get there early for this free event. The event starts at 9:30AM. For more information, check their website: http://www.georgetownheritagesociety.com. DGA is involved in the College Town Committee meetings held quarterly at Southwestern University. At the most recent meeting, we talked about the upcoming events to be held on campus and especially efforts to really give a hometown Georgetown welcome to the new and returning students in the fall. There will be a special presentation on Saturday night in the courthouse for the parents of new students during orientation weekend in August. We are working with Southwestern to see if we can add dinner on the Square to the event. And we will be pulling together welcome packets for the parents, so you will be hearing from us in late July/early August. We will send out notices to inquire if you have any brochures, fliers, coupons or other items to include in the bags. We welcome any ideas you may have about how to connect more effectively with the college faculty, staff and students. One item of interest at the DGA meeting last week was the concern of merchants about the proposal to relocate city employees to the old Albertson's building. There was some discussion, and DGA asked that our members submit thoughts and comments to us via email: trisha.tallman@verizon.net. The DGA Board will be meeting with the City Manager in May, and would like to represent the membership in the discussion. Thank you for taking time to send your comments to us.
See you around downtown~
