Monday Musings
Date: Mar 01, 2010

Happy Monday, DGA!

We had a great DGA meeting last week.  Here are some highlights:

  • There was a presentation about a golf tournament project called “Thanks to the Troops” in Sun City in April.  Anne Henry is spearheading this event for the second year .  She gave us the history of how she came up with the idea, and how it was such a success last year.  She is seeking help and donations from our membership and the entire downtown community.  You will probably be getting a call or visit from her if you have a business on or around the Square.  We think you will be as inspired by her story as we were at the meeting.  Many members made a donation at the meeting.
  • We are also gathering a committee to revamp the Friends of the Square program for this year.  Watch for details as it develops.
  • Cari Miller from Georgetown CVB announced that they have a supply of rack cards advertising the Poppy Festival in April.  If you want some to display in your business, let her know:  cmiller@georgetowntx.org
  • Also regarding the Poppy Festival, the question was raised about the poppy seed project that Century 21 HSK & Associates sponsored last fall.  We received this update from Billy Kurtz: Yes, they were planted.  We planted roughly 9 miles of the median and shoulder of I-35.  We also planted the ½ acre lot next to our office here on Hwy 29.  TXDOT distributed the seeds on I-35 for us the end of October.   Keep your fingers crossed…..

We just received a fun request from the City.  They are looking to photograph a vintage red convertible in front of the Palace Theatre.  This will be used as a reference for the artist who is creating an image they need for promoting the Red Poppy Festival this year.  If you own such a car or know someone who does, please send us an email: trisha.tallman@verizon.net.  Thank you!

This week is our First Friday for March.  We are taking on a decidedly GREEN theme for the event.  We will do a scavenger hunt similar to the one last month, and are seeking to fill four “grab bags” as prizes.  We will be visiting our downtown businesses to seek items you may wish to contribute for these bags.  We suggest that you think green when planning food or beverages for the evening.  We will be in contact with each of the businesses to determine if you plan to be open, and what sort of question we can use on the cards to direct our visitors to your shops.

Next week is the first Market Days of 2010 on Saturday, 3/13.  We will have posters and postcards that we will be bringing around and asking your help in distributing them.  Our coordinators, Jenny and Stephanie have lined up some wonderful new entertainment for the markets.  Check out the website, 2nd Saturday Market Days link, for information on the concerts they are launching this year.  We believe this will add another great incentive to bring folks downtown. Think nice weather!!!

Another note to remind everyone that our spring Citywide Garage Sale is fast approaching on Saturday March 27th.  We are starting to get applications from folks who want space.  And remember that the Caring Place offers each year to collect most of the unsold items, so folks do not have to take it all back home!  We hope those of you with shops on and around the Square will consider getting into the spirit with “sidewalk sale” tables outside your doors.

We had a note from Matt Painter at Community Impact.  They have launched a web version of the paper.  Here is a link to the latest Georgetown edition:  http://bit.ly/b3IwBV.    Did you see the great article they did on ideas for Valentine’s Day that highlighted many of our members?  Check out page 28 if you missed it.  They have only put the first section (what they call their “display” section) of the paper.  Our co-op ad is located in the “savings” section, which will be available soon in future issues, as they work through the “getting the bugs out” phase of the launch.  That means that soon our ad will be accessible to a much wider audience!   We are so fortunate to have the support of our local papers.  The Williamson County Sun regularly showcases one or more DGA events, and both papers are once again sponsoring the Citywide Garage Sale.  We sincerely appreciate the efforts of both these publications as we continually partner to promote downtown Georgetown!

Georgetown Winery sent an email about a new project they are offering later this year: Watch our website for Charter Winery Tours this summer to local Texas wineries and tasting bars.  See their website: www.GeorgetownWinery.com

We are still seeking renewals and new corporate memberships.  We know many businesses prefer to pay from an invoice, so we will start emailing invoices to you.  If you get one and have already paid, please let us know.  There may be some forms and checks that will come in while we are sending out the renewal notices.  Thank you for your support of DGA and all we are doing to keep our downtown vibrant!

See you around the Square~
